Chapter 44

The silence was deafening as Matt put down the weight a couple of hours later.

'Is she asleep' wondered Matt as he whipped his sweaty brow and face with a towel.

He leaned his head out the door.

Nothing, but silence could be heard.

Panic surged through his body as he dropped his towel and grabbed his gun.

Running into the living room of the cabin, Matt could see Sarah lying on the couch.

As he got closer, he could see she was laying half on and half off of the couch.

Her glass was sitting on the floor next to her and her book was lying on the floor.

The pages was already crumbled and bent.

"Sarah?" asked Matt shaking her shoulder gently but rough.

"Sarah Honey. Wake up." Said Matt with the sound of panic in his voice as he put two fingers against the side of her neck to check for a pulse.

"Oh fucking God, no." said Matt getting up and running into his room.

Grabbing his cell and pushing one button, he ran back, "This is Sawyer. I need an ambulance at the secluded cabin on Reggie Island. Hurry. Witness is pregnant and unconscious. No pulse or breathing. Hurry." Said Matt dropping his cell phone on the floor and picking up her lifeless body and laying her on the floor.

"Sarah Baby. Come back to me. I need you." Said Matt as he tilted her head back and lifted her chin.

He then lowered his head and put his ear down to her mouth.

"Nothing. Damn it to hell." Said Matt as he breathes two breaths in her mouth and then checked her pulse again.

"Damn it Brown Eyes. Don't do this to me." said Matt as he placed the heals of one hand in the center of her breast bone and gave quick downward thrust and then began to give her CPR one more time.

The sound of the mother to be gasping for air made Matt smile.

"Brown Eyes?" asked Matt with the look of relief in his eyes

"Matt, what happened?" asked Sarah

"I don't know, but help is on its way. Hey Sarah, stay with me now. Hey. Hey. No. Don't close your eyes. Sarah?" asked Matt as she slipped back in unconsciously.

The sound of sirens coming closer and closer relieved Matt as he started to weep over the mother to be unconscious body

CHapter 45

Matt paced the Emergency Room waiting area.

It had been two hours since he last seen his Brown Eyes.

The doctors and nursed took her pregnant lifeless body through a pair of double doors, where he knew he couldn't go.

Matt kept his focus on the double doors, praying silently that someone, anyone would come and tell him how his protectee is.

He scratched his fingers against his black shorts as his body urged for a cigarette, but he had told himself that he wasn't going to go outside until he seen his Brown Eyes.

"Sawyer?" asked Charlie walking in causing the bodyguard to jump and turn around

"Charlie." Said Matt

"What happened?" asked Charlie

"I don't really know. She laid down on the couch to rest and I went to lift weights. I didn't hear anything after I was through. I went to check on her and there she was laying on the couch. She had no breathing or pulse. I called for assistant and then started CPR and chest compression. She woke up for about a minute and then she was out. I haven't heard nothing." Said Matt

"Are you okay?" asked Charlie

"Yeah I'm fine. I just need a cigarette right now." Said Matt

"Then go smoke." Said Charlie

"No. I don't want too. I rather stay here." Said Matt

"Okay. I already made a call to her parents." Said Charlie

"Okay." Said Matt

"Matt?" asked Dr Caldwell walking out of the double doors

"Doc?" asked Matt with questions in his eyes

"They called me in because Sarah is one of my patients." Said Dr Caldwell

"How is she?" asked Matt

"She is conscious." Said Dr Caldwell

"Good, so what caused her to pass out?" asked Matt

"Her blood test shows that she had an extensive amount of alcohol in her system. That and the fact that she was a little dehydrated caused her to pass out." Said Dr Caldwell

"Wait a minutes, Brown Eyes, I mean Sarah, don't drink. Especially now." Said Matt

"Are you sure that was what it was?" asked Charlie

"Yes." Said Dr Caldwell

"What did she have to drink, Sawyer?" asked Charlie

"Just ginger ale is all I know of." Said Matt

"How is the baby?" asked Charlie

"Good so far. I did a sonogram and it seems to be fine, but I want her to stay overnight for observation on the baby." Said Dr Caldwell

"What will happen to it?" asked Matt

"Well, Sarah could miscarry or the baby will have low birth weight or even be born stillborn." Said Dr Caldwell

"When can I see her?" asked Matt

"Soon." Said Dr Caldwell

"Thank you." Said Charlie

"Well if you will excuse me, I will see to it that Sarah gets into a room." Said Dr Caldwell

"I swear to you, Charlie, all she had to drink was ginger ale." Said Matt

"I believe you." Said Charlie

"What are we going to do?" asked Matt

"Do you have anymore of it back at the cabin?" asked Charlie

"I think so." Said Matt

"Okay. I'm going to go get it and run it to the police lab and have them analyze it. Do you want to take the day off since she is in the hospital? You can go home and see your daughter." Said Charlie

"No. I was assigned to this case, I'm not going to quit it even for one night." Said Matt

"Okay, but I'm going to send another guy out here to help you." Said Charlie

"Fine. Whatever." Said Matt

Chapter 46

Sarah laid in the hospital bed rubbing her swollen stomach as tears rolled down her cheeks.

The sound of a knock caused her to look up and smile as she saw her bodyguard walked in.

As he made his way to the hospital bed, she began to sob loudly.

"I'm sorry." Cried Sarah as he held her in his arms

"Don't ever be sorry for anything. You hear me. You aint got nothing to be sorry for. You did nothing for." Said Matt consoling her.

"I didn't drink any alcohol. I swear." Said Sarah

"I know. I know." Said Matt

"I wouldn't do that. I love this baby too much." Said Sarah sniffling

"I know, Brown Eyes. That's why Charlie is going to test it and make sure that is what it was." Said Matt

"He is?" asked Sarah whipping her eyes with the back of her hands

"Yeah he is." Said Matt handing her a box of tissues

"What if something happens to the baby?" asked Sarah starting to cry again

"Hey. Don't talk like that. Nothing will happen to the baby. Not on my watch." Said Matt as Sarah wepted in his chest and Matt held her and soothed her with whispers in her ears

Chapter 47

Matt looked at his protectee sleeping in the bed with tears stains on her cheeks.

He stood up and stretched causing every bone in his muscular body to crack and pop.

Sliding out of the door and shutting it quietly behind him, Matt saw Charlie appearing to him with a folder in his hand

"How is she?" asked Charlie walking up to the exhausted looking bodyguard

"Not good. She finally fell asleep." Said Matt leaning against the wall

"And you?" asked Charlie

"I'm okay. I might go get me some coffee and go outside and smoke later. Let Mitch take over for a few minutes." Said Matt

"That's what you should do." Said Charlie

"Yeah. So, what you got?" asked Matt

"The ginger ale that Sarah drunk wasn't just ginger ale. It had a mixture of water and vodka. We also tested the bottle from the store and it was just ginger ale." Said Charlie

"So ours was laced with water and alcohol?" asked Matt

"Yes." Said Charlie

"Who would have done that?" asked Matt

"My hunch is Pete or someone who works at the police station, but I really don't see how Pete could have done it." Said Charlie

"Your hunches are never wrong, Charlie." Said Matt

"I know." Said Charlie

"Who signed off on sending us that stuff?" asked Matt

"That's the thing, Sawyer. No one and there were no finger prints on the bottles either. I took the pillows too and replaced them too myself. I destroyed them incase something was on or in them." Said Charlie

"Oh my fucking God." Said Matt

"I hate to say it, Matt, but someone we work with wants Sarah Calloway and her unborn child dead." Said Charlie

Chapter 48

Matt stood outside of the cool September night at the hospital and opened the new pack of cigarettes.

Flicking the plastic into the trash can, he took out the three inch white cigarette and stuck it in his mouth.

Using his newly furnished lighter and lit it.

As he inhaled the tobacco into his lungs and blow smoke, he sighed and started to relax.

Picking up his coffee from the bench rail, he put the steaming hot cup to his lips as a sharp pain in his shoulder caused him to drop his cup of coffee.

"What the hell?" asked Matt as he put his left hand on his shoulder and felt the flesh.

He put his hand in front of his face and he saw his own crimson red blood.

He knew exactly what had happened.

He'd been stabbed.

Chapter 52

One night

Sarah stood in front of the mirror in what is now Matt and Sarah's room.

Turning sideways, Sarah lifted her moon and stars maturity pajama top and looked at her seven month pregnant stomach.

"Hey." Said Matt smirking as he leaned against the doorframe wearing boxers

"Hey." Said Sarah

"How are you feeling?" asked Matt striding over to her

"Huge." Said Sarah

"You're not huge. You're beautiful." Said Matt putting his arms around her waist

"Thank you, but I still feel huge." Said Sarah leaning her head back on his chest

"I'm sorry." Said Matt kissing her neck gently as his big strong hands started rubbing her child fill stomach

"What's going to happen after all this is said and done?" asked Sarah

"Pete is going to jail where he belongs." Said Matt

"No. I meant about us." Said Sarah

"Oh." Said Matt

"I think we should talk about this. I want to end this thing and have some closer in my life, but I don't want to start something new between us when I don't know where it is." Said Sarah

"Come on. Lets sit down and talk." Said Matt taking her hand and leading her over to the bed

"What's going to happen to us?" asked Sarah as he helped her sit down on the bed slowly and carefully

"I don't know." Said Matt

"Will you go back home to Susanna and forget about us or will you and I be together?" asked Sarah

"I'm not going to forget about you. How can I not? You've grown on me. You're no longer the spoilt brat." Said Matt as Sarah chuckled.

"I honestly don't know what's going to happen when all this is said and done, but I know I have fallen in love with you. I never thought I could feel like this again since Cassidy." Said Matt

"You mean that?" asked Sarah looking at him

"Yes." Said Matt

"Really?" asked Sarah

"Yes. You are the first thing I think about when I wake up and you are the last thing I think about when I close my eyes at night." Said Matt as Sarah smiled

"What about the baby? Are you going to want to be the father to my baby?" asked Sarah

"Brown Eyes, I don't know." Said Matt

"Matt, this is a package deal. The baby comes with me just like Susanna comes with you and I don't mind that." Said Sarah

"Well, I do. I told you once that I don't want anymore kids." Said Matt getting up

"Cause you don't want to miss anything important in their lives." Said Sarah

"Exactly." Said Matt

"You don't have too." Said Sarah

"Well, what the hell do you want me to do, Sarah? Quit my job?" asked Matt

"Not exactly." Said Sarah

"I love my job." Said Matt

"Yeah because you get to use a gun. I know all about it." Said Sarah getting up

"Great. We're having our first fight and we're not officially together." Said Matt following her into the living room

"Wait a minute, I know why you don't want to be with me." Said Sarah turning around

"What?" asked Matt

"Why didn't I see it before?" asked Sarah

"What?" asked Matt

"You don't want to be with me because you're afraid that when you tell me to go back on the pill and I wont, you're afraid I'll get pregnant. That's it isn't it." Said Sarah

"No. That's ridicules, Brown Eyes." Said Matt

"No its not cause that's what you are feeling, that's what you are thinking." Said Sarah starting to cry

"Shut up okay. Stop crying and sit down. You need to calm down. Here. Sit down please." Said Matt gently sitting her down on the couch

"Okay." Said Sarah

"I want you and I to be together. I really do. Its like you said you and the baby are a package deal and I want that." Said Matt sitting down beside her on the couch and taking her hands

"You do?" asked Sarah sniffling

"Yeah. I really do. I want the package." Said Matt

"But you said that you didn't want anymore kids after Susanna." Said Sarah

"That was seven months ago." Said Matt

"Four." Said Sarah

"Okay. Four. That was before I stood here and watched you grow. That was before I felt your baby kick under my hand. I want it all. You, me, Susanna, this baby, and whatever else comes along even if I have to quit my job, I will." Said Matt

"No Matt, I don't want you to quit your job. You're so good at it. I didn't mean for you to quit your job. We can work something out. I promise." Said Sarah

"We'll talk about it more after this Pete guy is behind bars." Said Matt

"Okay." Said Sarah as Matt puts his arms around her pregnant body.

Sarah looked up and saw a figure standing in the window.

All, but his face was covered in black.

Sarah opened her mouth and let out a piercing scream.

Chapter 53

"Oh my God." Said Sarah putting her hand over her mouth in shock

"What? What is it?" asked Matt turning his head around to see nothing in the window.

"Its Pete." Said Sarah

"It cant be." Said Matt

"It was. I swear it was him." Said Sarah crying

"Okay. Okay." Said Matt getting up

"Don't leave me. Where are you going?" asked Sarah

"I'm just going to get my gun. Stay here." Said Matt running into the bedroom as Sarah cries on the couch.

"Okay. Listen to me. Okay Sarah, you need to listen to me. Take this gun and hold it. Hold it for me. I'm going out the door. I'm going to lock it, and if you see him again, don't think twice about shooting. Get on the floor if you can." Said Matt kissing his shaking protectee as he walks out the door gripping the gun in front of him

Sarah stood there, shaking from shock for about a minute, then she quickly and carefully got on the floor behind the couch, even if her big stomach got in the way.

Sarah sat behind the couch on the floor in a ball as best as she could and holding the gun she didn't how to use.

The sound of glass shattering made Sarah tremble with fear.

Clutching the gun in her small hand, her knuckles turned white.

"Sarah, come out come out wherever you are." Said Pete taunting her as if it was Hannibal Lector in Silence Of The Lambs.

Sarah closed her eyes and silently prayed as she felt the pain of her hair being pulled.

"There you are. Get up you bitch." Said Pete pulling her up by her hair as Sarah cried.

"Thought I wouldn't find you, didn't you?" asked Pete

"Leave me alone." Said Sarah crying

"How can I not?" asked Pete

"I swear I'll shoot you." Said Sarah holding up the gun and pointing it at him

"Go ahead and shoot me." said Pete stepping back

Sarah pulled back the trigger and nothing.

She kept pulling the trigger, hoping to at least release one bullet enough to wound her attacker.

"You stupid bitch, you don't even know how to use a gun." Said Pete

"Leave me alone." Said Sarah pleading with him

"I cant do that because you did a bad, bad thing. You went and told the cops about me, about what I did." Said Pete taking a strand of her brown hair and putting it behind her ear

"No. I didn't. I swear." Said Sarah

"Don't lie to me!" yelled Peter grabbing the back of her neck as she cried out

"You and your boyfriend will never find me. I found you once and I can find you again. Now before that dumb blockhead comes back, lets finish what we started." Said Pete as Sarah took the gun and hit him in the face.

She repeatedly kept hitting him as he ran out of the door
