i'd tell him "well when it comes time to pay the final bill, i'll let you know how many people are ahead of you and just let you guess when you can expect payment."

i guess my husband and i lucked out with our contractor. aside from a few aesthetic problems (very minor, husband is just picky.) and one mechanical problem with was the manufacturers fault, our house was finished in just over 4 months from start to finish and they started it at the end of january in 2 feet of snow! they were there every day and a few subcontractors even worked on the weekends.

the only problem i had was with our contractor's 2 guys that worked there very day. while installing my ikea kitchen cupboards they cracked a couple of the cabinets and the drawers but never said anything. and a couple of them were really obvious. our contractor actually paid for them but still. i'd be pissed if i were him because of their carelessness.
