what type of PR are you interested in? Because honestly, everything you need to know is learned on the job, not in school.

I want to do entertainment PR. I have my bachelors in Music Industry. Anytime I go for an interview I'm told the following:
-Your major seems too spread out, you didn't focus on PR at all, we aren't sure you are qualified. -You aren't qualified, have no experience. -Do you have clippings? (NO!) Help? I really feel I need to learn something... |

do not go to school! I was a Sociology major and have been working in entertainment PR for 6 years. INTERNSHIPS ARE KEY!

I had an internship in a record label. Except it was in the marketing department. The problem is I'm 25 years old I can't afford to do an internship
when they are for college students...

friends, and in my experience hiring people, a master's doesn't necessarily help right off the bat (you need to have the experience to go with it). I
would say, though, that it does help you advance faster and can help to get you further (and there are a good amount of jobs nowadays that require a
master's degree). But again, that's all related to my field, not entertainment PR.
I would think that a master's in PR or a certificate or something would be helpful in your case since employers are thinking your major is too far
spread out. A master's sometimes can help you out with experience, but not always (again, I think it helps more further down the line than right away).
Honestly, sounds like you need to do an internship or two.

where are you interviewing?
my only other suggestion would be to get a job with a temp agency that focuses on entertainment jobs. but i can't stress enough how a masters is not going to get you anywhere. |

Does anyone know of temp agencies that focus on entertainment? Or of places that will offer internships to someone not in college?
-I've interviewed at record labels for publicity department positions. Just assistant positions also... |

I'm working on my masters in English and I hate it ... but I was also able to get a part-time job as an editorial assistant b/c I did internships in
college. So, start at the bottom? The temp agency suggestion is a good one.

Just cold send your cover letter and resume to PR agencies that are of interest to you. In your cover letter, explain that you are a recent grad looking to
gain experience and are searching for an internship.

the people I've worked with didn't have more than a high school degree or maybe some college, that doesn't mean that what I've done in school
hasn't helped me. I've been lucky with awesome instructors that made us get experience and I have never had a problem getting a job in radio so far and
I've only done it part time.

sorry, i am in LA so i am not aware of NY temp agencies.
Though i do suggest contacting studios with NY offices like FOX. They can refer you to their temp service. |

My major was Music Industry from SUNY Oneonta. I did an internship at Universal Music Group in the marketing / new media departments of 3 labels. I am looking
for a PR/publicity assistant type job. I just want something to start out with so I can work my way up. It seems the doors just keep shutting though. I'm
not sure if I'm doing something wrong, or if I'm just totally not qualified.

Have you ever looked at www.mediabistro.com ? It's a good job site w/ internships (paid).

i feel that PR assistant jobs are pretty coveted. people are usually hired because they know someone or they have already interned with that company. don't
give up!
do you have someone at Universal that might be able to write you a recommendation? are you willing to do all types of PR: music, tv/movies, personal? |

Yes I know people at Universal who can write me a recommendation. I'm absolutely willing to do anything. I just want my foot in some sort of door.
