100 years ago people worked from sun up to sun down. Most people were poor, there were no cars, no internet, no TV, not many bathrooms(outhouse if you were lucky), no body shaving or hygiene for that matter, no civil or women's rights. People in Europe used to go for a whole year without bathing 500 years ago, that's why they wore so much fragrance.
