Happy birthday, David Archuleta! 09:03 PM PT, Dec 27 2008 As of Sunday, David Archuleta is a man. Legal to vote and to drink in Argentina, Estonia, Hong Kong, Moldova and Sweden -- but not in the U.S. Legal to appear on television shows without having to do hours of tutor-supervised studies. And now legally of age to marry in all 50 of the United States. Needless to say, his 17th year was momentous for Archuleta, rocketing out of nowhere to become the instant leader of the greatest movement "American Idol" has every known; a million selling single; an album that should turn gold momentarily. Lately Archuleta has been making Christmas appearances just about everywhere on Earth. So let us wish a very happy birthday to this shining light of Season 7, of whom in all my reporting in and around the Idoldome, in conversations with his comrades, the people who make the show and the fans who have had the chance to meet him, I have never heard anyone say that he has ever for one second been anything but the nicest lad on Earth. Not a single diva story in a year of "Idol." That is an accomplishment. The final stanza of Rudyard Kipling's poem "If" is a bit of a hackneyed sentiment, but nonetheless seems to hit the nail on the head regarding the coming of age of young Archuleta. So we post it here with our best birthday wishes: If you can talk with crowds and keep your virtue, Or walk with kings -- nor lose the common touch; If neither foes nor loving friends can hurt you; If all men count with you, but none too much; If you can fill the unforgiving minute With sixty seconds' worth of distance run, Yours is the Earth and everything that's in it, And -- which is more -- you'll be a Man, my son! -- Richard Rushfield

December 28, 2008 7:26 AM Happy Birthday to David Archuleta! Posted by Bob Payne Season 7 runner-up David Archuleta turns 18 today - and wow, what an amazing year for the young singer from Murray, Utah. A year ago he was singing in small rooms for friends and family, and now he's singing for -- and being drowned out by -- a crowd of 16,000 at New York's Madison Square Garden. Say what you will about the declining audience of "American Idol," but you can't deny its ability to mint pop music stars. Archuleta's eponymous debut CD just cleared the half-million mark in sales and is still going strong. And his first single, "Crush," has topped 1.2 million in downloads. But even with all that success, those around him say Archuleta is still humble almost to a fault. When I had the pleasure of interviewing him last July, he definitely exhibited traits that brought jeers during "AI": a habit of rambling, a constant smile that made him seem even younger than he was, and an inability to say something negative about anything or anybody. But when you go deeper, you find him to be insightful, shrewd in the ways of the music business, and unwavering in his work ethic and commitment to his craft. Mr. Archuleta, may the year ahead bring you even more success and -- more importantly -- happiness. Recently while appearing at a Jingle Jam concert in Atlanta, David's band brought a cake onstage and sang him "Happy Birthday" -- with the audience's help. There were fake candles on the cake though, and Archuleta's reaction is hilarious: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_qydZpGX44g

Last year you told Seventeen you hadn't had your first kiss yet. Any updates? No! I'm still waiting for the right moment. I think so many people want to rush things - they want to rush hanging out, they want to rush making out - and then it's like they don't even know the person they're with. You're such a romantic! I think girls get a bad rep for being emotional all the time. But I think a lot of guys are too. A lot of my guy friends, they really feel things deeply. What else don't girls know about guys? Girls tend to blame themselves - even when the guy is the one who messed up. My girl friends will tell me about something a guy did, and I'm like 'that's not your fault.' Sometimes guys are just dork faces. But girls don't see it that way. Why do you think that is? Guys and girls think about relationships differently. Girls say a guy is 'so sweet' and analyze everything he does. And a guy is just like 'yeah, she's hot.' That's why you have to take it slow. People want to be in love so badly that they throw themselves in it, without stopping to figure out if it's real. What would be your perfect Valentine's Day? I don't think I've ever done anything on Valentine's Day! But I think I'd like riding in a gondola. And then afterward going to get sherbet. I like to keep things light and fun! David Archuleta answers 17 juicy questions! When was your first kiss? I haven't had a first kiss. If you could take any celebrity to the prom, who would it be? I'd have to say Jordin [Sparks]. She's just really cool. But she's so tall-especially in heels! What's a girl fashion trend that confuses you? I don't get those really short skirts. What's the girly movie you secretly love? I only know of one, and it was good: A Walk to Remember. I hear so much about The Notebook, but I've never seen it. That's the one all the girls were like, "Aww!" What's your TV guilty pleasure? I like cartoons. I like Foster's Home for Imaginary Friends. It's funny! It has things that kids wouldn't get. It's like, if you're mature, you get it. I like that and The Fairly OddParents. Who would play you in the movie version of your life? I'm a pretty spacey guy, so it'd be funny to see how Robin Williams would act being me even though he's old enough to be my dad. What's your dream job? To be doing what I am now, only more developed and have more experience in this. But this is my dream job, that's what's funny about it! I never thought I'd be here. I'm in the recording studio right now, just looking at the mics and the headphones and it's crazy! If not music, I think it would be pretty cool to be an ear, nose, and throat doctor. If you could trade places with anyone in the world for one day, who would it be? I think Will Smith would be pretty cool. He's my favorite actor. Who in your family are you closest to? I'm close with all of them, really; it's just all for different reasons. My mom is just someone who's easy to talk to and hang with. My sister, it's always cool to be able to help her out with things. My brother is fun when we're just joking and messing around. And my dad is someone who's helpful with my music and easy to talk to about that stuff because he understands me in that sense. So it's like different kinds of closeness with everyone. What's your favorite Website? I like iambored.com, YouTube, and I'm addicted to MySpace. What's the fast food you can't live without? Does Subway count? I love Subway. "Eat fresh!" What's your worst habit? Fidgeting with my hands, cracking my knuckles, and stuff like that. Or just spacing out; I'm good at doing that! What's the last song you listened to on your iPod? "Many The Miles" by Sara Bareilles. I love Sara Bareilles. She's just so clever. I wish I were her. She's so awesome. What's the last thing you bought? I had to pay an overweight fee because my luggage was too heavy. What did you dream about last night? I dreamed I was in New York, and I was trying to get past security to get into a talk show to see someone perform (but I don't remember who). Security let me in because of my name, but it was weird. My friends were trying to sneak in, and it's like they had to walk across this glass staircase. It didn't make sense. I went but they didn't even stop me or anything. They just had me sign my name on like a job application. It didn't make sense; it was weird! How much money is in your wallet right now? I don't know. I don't carry my wallet around. I usually keep it in one of my hidden drawers in my room at my house. What's the best part of being 17? There are a lot of good things! Being able to hang out with friends and do all the weird stupid things together. People don't usually do that unless they're this age. I love going to random coffee houses that are open late at night.
