I just had this conversation last week. A friend of mine, a guy, has a daughter but has played no part in her life. She's probably 11 or 12 years old now.

When he and his girlfriend found out she was pregnant, they were teenagers in their last year of high school. He told her he wasn't ready emotionally and financially to care for a child at that point in his life -- he needed to go to university and all that. She decided to keep the baby anyway.

It caused a lot of tension and they broke up before she even gave birth. I'm not sure if he technically has signed away his rights -- I assume he did since he does not pay child support and like I said, plays no part in her life. And he's stuck with this stigma of being a deadbeat dad and I don't think that's entirely fair.

Yes, accidents happen, but if it takes 2 people to procreate, then those same 2 people need to mutually agree on the decision to keep, abort, or give the baby away for adoption. It's not fair for just the woman to make the decision. And that, JJB, is my unpopular opinion of the day.
