Don't buy an HP. That's what I have. It's okay in general but their power jacks suck and always go bad. We got this in March of '08 and in like January of '09 we sent it in to get the jack replaced (still under warranty). It worked fine until a few months ago and we started having the same problem. It's not under warranty now and they refused to do anything about it unless we paid over $300. I've heard a LOT of people have the same issues with HP's.
Yes, I had this issue with my HP as well.  After the warranty, my dad was able to solder the jack back in place.  If you can find someone that knows what their doing, you could get it done cheaper that $300.
Sometimes the problem is that the connections on the jack come loose and just soldering it will fix it.  Sometimes the jack itself goes bad.  My husband tried soldering ours and it didn't work.  The problem with ours seems to be that the jack doesn't hold onto the power cord tight enough to keep the connection.  But you can still get a replacement jack for $50-ish dollars and solder it in.  A lot cheaper than what HP wants, but you still shouldn't have to deal with that at all.

I had the same problem with my HP I've had it since high school. After I found out how much it would cost to have it Soldered, buying a new laptop seemed cheaper and it would include the more features as well. Plus my HP was really heavier than both my Dell and Acer.
