I'm aware of how the process works, I just did that exact thing a few months ago. The lady who purchased my car had to get a loan on her own, and then had to get me a cashier's check. That can sometimes be more difficult than having a dealership working with a bank to get you a loan, especially if the privately-sold car has over 80k miles. And, as I said, a dealership will often offer incentives for trade-ins. I've done both and, in my case, neither one was more advantageous than the other. That's just me, though.
