Absolutely! If you swim at a gym they should have a supply closet of items to use like water noodles and kick boards. I usually grab a kick board and thigh buoy (its a foam thing that looks like a capital I ) right when I walk in the pool area and bring it to the lane I'm going to work in. The more you work on breathing, the easier doing laps and anything else in the water will be much more relaxing for you.

I usually lean my elbows/forearms on the board and kick my legs as hard as I can (and screw worrying about the people around you getting wet, they're in a pool for crissakes and YOU are there to work out! ) and go up and down a few times when I first get in the pool. Then I count the blue & white 'beads' or whatever they are, on the lane dividers and work on pushing off and gliding along under water for as far as I can. The more you work on this the better you get at holding your breath. The buoy helps with keeping your legs up as you kick. I use that some of the time.

Thats just a couple of things I do. You can make up your own routine of course, but the kick board and the thigh buoy are 2 things I usually grab and bring to my lane. Oh and I swim late at night because my gym closes at 11. I can't STAND sharing a lane and refuse to. If for some weird reason all the lanes are being used I'll totally go to another location. I'm THAT picky
