We don't know yet but children's minds are very easy to manipulate and since she was abducted when she was 11, her abductors probably did a real number on her.
In cases like those most abducted kids that are found years later, actually went to school and were allowed to go outside and speak to people to some extent.
It's very easy to brainwash and instate fear into a kid's mind.
Gardens of the Night, with Evan Ross, was about two children who were kidnapped at young ages. They were told that their parents didn't want them anymore. The children in the movie were pretty young, younger than 11, but if you tell a child of any age something long enough, it starts to become true to them.
