I can use family as back up in those cases, but I get what you mean. I'd like something reliable, but I also feel that a used car isn't reliable in another sense. Imagine buying a used car for $3000 and having to put a couple hundred/thousand dollars in repairs into it if I end up with a lemon?
You take that chance with any car, new or used. I've had my car that my parents bought used for me for 5 years and it's 12 years old and I've just now (after 10 years of it being around) had to put money in it.

My parents bought a brand new car and had nothing but problems with it, all the time. And once the warranty was up, they had to start paying, but it was brand new.
