For all those who don't have the US weekly I thought I'd be nice and type out the entire article minus the Justin/Britney thing cause it's all ready been posted.
In 1995, Lance Bass- A shy 16-year-old from Clinton, Mississippi was asked to travel to Orlando Florida, and try out for a new boy band called 'Nsync. During the audition, he met the other members: Chris Kirkpatrick and Joey Fatone and All New Micky Mouse Club alums JC Chasez and Justin Timberlake. "I could tell immediately that Justin was to be the offical 'cool cat' of the group, even if he was all of 14 yrs old." recalls Bass. Thanks to their clean-cut looks and infectious sound, 'Nsync soon became a phenomenon- their 2000 CD No Strings Attached, sold 2.4 million copies in it's first week. But While the group was on hiatus in 2002, Timberlake opted to make a solo CD. As Bass now 28, describes in his autobiography,
Out Of Sync
(out October 23), the move would prove to be life-shattering.
A Shocking Decision
In the summer of 2004, two years after our initial six month hiatus, the band got together in Orlando to make an appearance at a celebrity basketball game to raise money for 'NSync's official charity, Challenge for the Children. As we did every year, 'NSync sang "The Star Spangled Banner" before the game. Although I didn't know it at the time, this was the last time we would ever perform together. After the festivities we decided to hold our annual 'NSync meeting to discuss the ongoing business and direction of the band. It was at this meeting that Justin dropped his version of the atomic bomb. He told us what was really happening: He was trying to find his own sound and was just not feeling the band anymore. He concluded by saying he didn't think it was going to happen because we weren't the same group anymore. His meaning was clear. He went on to talk some more about the group's focus, that he didn't think any of us was operating in the best interest of the band. I asked him what he meant by that and he said, "Well you know, when y'all did your movie" meaning Joey and me [and their 2001 flop, On The Line]
The Aftermath
I couldn't believe it. That sounded like the lamest excuse imaginable. Joey and I looked at each other in amazement- like, Whoa! According to Justin the whole reason for the break up of 'NSync was everyone else's fault? That was crazy! All of us had done nothing but wait form him to feel he was ready to start working on a new 'NSync album. What shocked Joey and me especially was that the rest of the guys quickly seemed to fall behind Justin, as if somehow they agreed with him that it was our fault! Wow, I thought to myself, I must have been completely blind. I'd always thought that if anything our movie would bring new fans to our music. And hadn't Justin made a movie [2000's Model Behavior] the year before we did ours? As much as I hated to admit it, this was a lot of smoke being blown to cover up the fact that Justin wanted to leave the band.
Picking Up The Pieces
I felt completely betrayed. All of us had been strung along to believe that just beyond he horizon, we were going to go back to the studio and make a new album. It pissed me off that Justin's life got set up perfectly before he came back to the rest of us. Why couldn't Justin keep the franchise intact while he did his own thing? As I thought about it, the simple truth slowly became clear. Justin's time to become a solo star had arrived. Looking back at the bands last album and video, I could see everything seemed to naturally favor Justin. Sometimes during photo shoots, we'd kid around with the photographers and move Justin to the side while putting one of us in the middle; they would always quite "diplomatically" move us back into place. I had tears in my eyes as Justin told us the sad news, and Joey did as well. Chris and JC didn't get as emotiona; looking back I tend to think that they were more aware of what was coming than Joey and I were. What was I going to do? Did I have any value outside of the band? It was a difficult transition for me to make, and it's had it's fair share of anxiety and insecurity, but slowly I began to feel that I could do things on my own. Being in a band meant I had to depend on four other guys. Being on my own meant I had to depend on myself. That made all the difference in the world.
