I'm not ready for this at all. Yes we all knew there would be a day that he would retire but now that it is a reality I dont like it. I havent made it to the new yankee stadium yet so now I have a road trip in my future to see him play again. I went to the old Yankee stadium in its last year. I got to sit 6 rows from the yankee dug out (yes, i paid a lot of money for it). I had a sign for derek and he saw it and waved to me. I flipped out!! All the people around me laughed and thought it was nice he waved to me. I would love to meet him one day.

I ran right into Derek Jeter at a club a few years ago. Literally ran into his chest. He's 6'3" and I'm about 5'2". When I looked up and realized who it was I was mortified and he could tell. Cut to the next day, I'm on the field with a guest who has a first pitch before the Yankees at Twins game. I'm standing in front of the Yankees dugout and I see him in the dugout and he looks at me and chuckles.

He was also really gracious to one of my coworkers that had to take him to the hospital when he got hurt here one year. He actually introduced himself, shook my coworkers hand and thanked him for taking time out of his day to take him to the hospital.

I will cry when he's done...but I'm excited about the Yankees coming through to Minnesota this year. If it's anything like when Mariano retired, I think I might get to officially meet him when I authenticate his uniform after each game.

I am so envious of your job.

Almost the same thing happened to me at work a few years ago with one of the guys from the Heat.  I'm also 5'2" and I was walking into my restaurant to check on some tables and literally hit a wall, and that wall was one of the players from the Heat. I bounced right off him and he had to steady me so I didn't fall.  We had a good laugh together.  I always came out to his table to say hello every week after that.
