The difference there is, if you damage your own car, you have to figure out how to pay to fix it, pay for a new one, or deal without it.  It doesn't affect everybody else.  The cost of me purchasing a car, making any repairs my car needs, or MY insurance does not rise if you decide to say drive drunk.  If you don't have health insurance and you end up in a serious accident or developing a serious illness, you getting ANY healthcare, even at the ER where they're usually required to treat you, makes my costs go up.
