Yes, well there has to be a consequence for people who make irresponsible choices -- especially since insurance companies aren't allowed to deny those people care anymore.  Refusing to get health care is an irresponsible choice that impacts others.  A $500 fine and no license is a significantly more lenient consequence than being denied insurance down the road for pre-existing conditions.  

I understanding hating the mandate.  Nothing makes my skin crawl like the concept of a government mandate.  But this one is pretty necessary unless we just wanted to go to a single payer system all together . . .

But it isn't refusing health care; it's refusing health insurance.
