Well, it is an elective medical procedure, and there are risks in anything like that, but from what I know they aren't that common and I wouldn't call it a bad idea.

I donated about a year ago. It took a while for me to be matched with a family, but once I did the whole process wasn't too bad. It was a couple of weeks of injections (starting with once a day and ending with twice) and the procedure itself takes about 15-20 min. It is done under general anesthesia, so there is somewhat of a risk there.. I had absolutely no side effects from the treatments and recovery was quick.
