I had tonsil stones for years. I had such a coughing fit one morning that I coughed up blood and three or four stones and made an appointment with an ENT. He asked me if I coughed constantly during the day and if I woke up frequently at night coughing and gagging. I said yes and asked why. He told me that my tonsils were so enlarged and infected and inflamed that they were probably touching, causing the coughing and gagging. A month later I had them removed. After the surgery, he told me I had the largest tonsils he's ever seen in his 40 years of practice.

That being said, while I'm so so happy I had my surgery, I would not recommend it unless it's a severe case like mine was. The recovery time is a bitch. I couldn't talk and I was out of work for two weeks and I didn't fully recover for another month. My mouth smelled like death for weeks because of the scabbing and scarring in my throat. I still occasionally have difficulty swallowing. Especially out of a glass without a straw, it's the worst feeling ever; feels almost like drowning. So consider it carefully.
