Next thing you know the aunt shows up and in no uncertain terms it was made clear she wanted the pool to herself. It was just my boyfriend, me, and another friend floating around drinking and she ended up making a big fuss over it to my friend's mom about how I must have been up to something because my boyfriend was there. Riiiiight, because I would definitely invite my friend over too if that was the case. Point being, people need to know and understand boundaries. It's simply rude, regardless of what the owner has said about being welcome to enjoy something. The respectful and polite thing to do is to always ask and not abuse the privilege. Plus, if you know you're joining the family in enjoying it you probably should bring something over so the family does not feel obligated to feed you.
