If someone said this already, I apologize because I haven't read this entire thing yet, but I know some stores do not allow you to work off the clock and you can actually be fired instantly for it.  I don't know if Home Depot does that or not but when I worked at Wal-Mart it was one of the rules I hated so much.  Because you would have people ask you stuff when you just clocked out and you either risk your job and help them or try to bring them to someone who is on the clock in the department they are asking about, which is what I always tried to do.  Because there were three people during my time working there who were fired for that reason.  It was stupid, but I guess it stemmed from some lawsuit in the past, I don't remember the details anymore.
