The Shining within the top four? That's ok with me.
I only just read that in the last few months and I LOVED it.  I've never had a book scare me, ever, and I don't scare remotely easily at movies either.  But The Shining legitimately freaked me out.  I was having dreams that I was in the Overlook.

I always suggest newer readers check out his short stories - it's a great way to get into his writing and there's enough variety of stories to find ones you like.

I've enjoyed pretty much any book of his I've read. Except I had a hard time with the last half of Bag of Bones. I wish he had cut much of it like his publisher had suggested. It became kind of tedious and ended just asking jjb to spoil me. I am semi-ashamed.smiley: laugh
I really do like the short stories I've read, but I enjoy novels a lot more.  I like having lots of time with the characters to really get to know them and I rarely, if ever, get that from a short story.  It's just not really possible to do.

And I think we had this conversation about Bag of Bones.  Was it just recently that you read it...like around the time the miniseries aired?  I loved the book and have no problem with how long it is.  But then I don't have a problem with the length of The Stand, The Tommyknockers, or Insomnia either.    In fact, I feel kind of confused when I read like a 200 page book.  It's like, "Well, where's the rest of this?  You're sure this isn't a children's book?"
