I got reminded of how an idiot FedEx guy left a package from my husband's employer OUTSIDE my apartment building. He probably rang the bell to get in, but we weren't home and he left the envelope outside the main building door, so anyone could have taken it. Like literally anyone. He could have at least left it inside the building, because only residents can get in. Or he could have brought it to the management office, or the guard house, or he could have just taken it back with him and tried to redeliver the next day.

There was a 3k plus check in the envelope. Thankfully, no one took it and even if someone did, they probably wouldn't be able to cash the check. But still, all the trouble my husband would have to go through with his employer if the check was lost.
