I live in Salem, it's definitely worth the trip. If the weather is decent, you can take the ferry in, it's a nice ride and only about $20 round trip. They tell you about a lot of the islands and the history of them. If u end up driving up north, check out Marblehead (it's beautiful) and eat at the Landing. They have the best clam chowder in the state. I agree with taking the duck tour in Boston. It's really quite awesome.
