This is probably true.

I can understand someone not wanting a knock-off of their stuff out there for the artistic issues involved, however I don't believe that's the real case. It just seems to me to be a class issue. High end, rich designers don't want their stuff (a replica of it anyway) to be seen being worn by lower income, lower class people. They have a certain clientele that they want representing their stuff and that clientele is rich people and celebrities. The price alone that they charge for their stuff is evidence of that.
