I feel like such a poseur sometimes because my camera is so much more expensive than I need. I'm not even an amateur photographer. I'm just a normal person who needs to take pictures of her travels sometimes. So my pictures pretty much suck. But my husband always wished he had time to be an amateur photographer (he studied it in college - though not to fully complete a degree in it), so he bought me a camera that he would have wanted for himself. As a gift.

But yeah, every time people see me whip it out, they're full of questions and want to hear about my photography and flip through pictures on the camera. And I have to admit that it's a complete waste of money on me and I'm not trying to be something I'm not!

He could probably still become an amateur photogapher. You do not need a degree to become a photographer. There are many ways to become a photographer without getting a degree. If he is not sure about it, he can look become an assistant...
That's really nice of you to offer suggestions.    What's holding him back though is time/energy.  He works a job with long hours that really drains him of his energy.  I wish he could use any free time he had for activities that would bring him some happiness, but he's in a spot right now that is very defeatist and he'd rather sit around when he has a minute rather than explore what he used to be interested in.  I'm not defending his position, just explaining it to you!
