Yes, I volunteer for an animal rescue group.
The two biggest ones I've been involved in:
10 hours after I moved into my brand new home, I came down the steps and found a cat sitting on my patio. Fully grown male that after eating kitten food for about 36 hours, weight just over 6lbs when I took him to the vets after the weekend. He'd been without proper food for so long, his black coat had turned brown. He couldn't use one of his back paws, later finding out it had a deep infection, his 2 front paws were infected to the point it had started deteriorating the little meta tarsal/tarsal bones, his ears were "cauliflowered" from scar tissue from hematomas in them, fleas, ear mites, and over all a very grateful and loving attitude. Oh, and FIV+. Nursed him back to health, and he was adopted for the 2nd and final time about a year later. (1st adopter had to return him because she was undergoing chemotherapy and for some reason he kept scratching her wanting food... he never did it to me or the 2nd owners so I think it was a learned/reinforced behavior on her part). That was Charlie.
We pulled, once all said and done and everyone had their kittens, 26 cats and kittens from a neglect situation. The "gentleman" had a cat that had 5 kittens that started having kittens and he put them out of his house, refused to give them food, water, or shelter, told them to "leave or die", and would dump or destroy and food or water the neighbors put out. Two or three of them had severe tail wounds that required part or full amputations. We got several calls from the neighbors and were able to talk the man into surrendering them to us. It took us 2 days and much patience and scrambling, but we got them all. Nearly 2 years later and we only have 1 of that crew left. I've been asked several times why we took them instead of turning him over to the authorities and it was because of the city/county he lived in. It does not have a very good animal protective services and instead of 23 adoptions (2 passed away and the 1 we still have), most likely they would have all been euthanize (and not very humanely) once the investigation was over. we also threatened that if he pulled a stunt like that again, we would turn him over. The neighbors still call us from time to time with updates.
