That's not true. With plain view doctrine the cop must have probable cause to believe an item(s) is evidence of a crime or is contraband i.e if you have cocaine or a gun laying in plain view. They also can't move any object to get a better view. Something being unlocked such as an unlocked glovebox is not grounds to search without a warrant or consent the owner.
