My friends would make the drive. You say this about parents, friends, teachers, everything somebody doesn't have a perfect something of. But anyway, my friends would most likely make the drive but eventually you grow up and when someone says "You know, after the long trip I just don't want to make the 30 minute drive (which ends up being an hour)" then I wouldn't freak out and call them a bad friend. Honestly, I probably wouldn't make the hour drive after a trip like that.
Then the friend shouldn't have agreed to drive her home several weeks ago.

She changed her mind, FOR SHAME. FOR SHAAAAAME.

Damn I'd hate to be your friend. Flakiness and lack of compassion are not on my list.

For the OP's "friend" to cancel a ride that she had committed to weeks prior the DAY before they leave for a weekend intended to celebrate the OP's birthday is pretty shitty.
It's just mind boggling to me how idiocentric people can be. It wouldn't hurt to extend the hand every once in a while, especially when the whole point of the trip is for the birthday girl to actually BE there. I'd suggest finding better friends.
