Not in the slightest - don't know how you managed to squeeze that out of it. If I defend another person's right to free speech am I suggesting that by virtue of them having it everybody would accept/like what they have to say? Course not.

The point is equality under the law, not universal approval. Anybody waiting for the latter would be better off sticking around for Godot.

I see no inherent problem in a civil union - but if you're going to do that the distinction shouldn't be between gay and straight. Heck, I'm sure plenty of straight couples might prefer the notion of a civil union to marriage.
