Keeping civil unions separate from marriages is just more "separate but equal" shit. There's more social and cultural significance to the term "marriage" than simply state recognition/benefits and no reason that heterosexuality should have a monopoly on that. Certainly no reason that the religions should when it predates most if not all of them.

And nobody's asking permission to love anybody - they're after a principle much bigger than some tax benefits and making inheritance easier (though, granted, they'd like that too).
