Try going vegetarian first.  It teaches you how to avoid meat without as many restrictions.  Once you master that, move on to being vegan and it will feel like much less of an intense lifestyle change.

If anyone is serious about adopting a vegetarian or vegan lifestyle, I firmly encourage you to check out a brand called Gardein.  It is hands down the best faux meat I have ever had.  Check out their website, they have a ton of really great recipes AND it won't require you to give up your favorite meals to start eating "weird" foods.

Another way to avoid feeling like you're giving up everything you like to eat is to find alternative ways of preparing them.  I have a Betty Crocker cookbook called "Easy Everyday Vegetarian" that is fantastic for preparing what you already love, vegetarian-style.

Finally, if you have a Whole Foods near you GO THERE.  Their deli has amazing options for vegan dishes.  I personally am obsessed with their General Tso's Vegan Chicken.  Yum!
