There is an actual reason for it. It's like any other gov't program or company policy. If you don't qualify for it, you don't get it. I don't know that just seems ridiculous to me. You shouldn't get a six month break from work for no reason. Reason for maternity leave? Shit, slaves used to give birth (sometimes in the field) and strap their newborn on their backs as they continued to work. The months allowed by many jobs is overkill if "necessary" at all. Maybe they could give the same paid leave to those that choose to have surgical procedures (ie lifts, bypasses and such).Thank you. Nuva, I'd give your argument partial credit if at least the reality was that other circumstances (e.g. medical, bereavement) where given such generous time off (52 weeks + 55% of salary). However it's not, and the message that it's sending is that having a baby makes a woman and her partner special, and they deserve special benefits and perks, which is bullshit!
