ok but maternity leave isn't perk for women who have kids just because the gov't likes women with kids better. There is an actual reason for it. It's like any other gov't program or company policy. If you don't qualify for it, you don't get it. I don't know that just seems ridiculous to me. You shouldn't get a six month break from work for no reason.

Reason for maternity leave? Shit, slaves used to give birth (sometimes in the field) and strap their newborn on their backs as they continued to work. The months allowed by many jobs is overkill if "necessary" at all. Maybe they could give the same paid leave to those that choose to have surgical procedures (ie lifts, bypasses and such).
Thank you.

Nuva, I'd give your argument partial credit if at least the reality was that other circumstances (e.g. medical, bereavement) where given such generous time off (52 weeks + 55% of salary). However it's not, and the message that it's sending is that having a baby makes a woman and her partner special, and they deserve special benefits and perks, which is bullshit!

yes but part of the reason mandatory maternity leave was created was so that women didn't have to lose their job just because they wanted to have children. So it's not fair for childfree people to not get 6 mos off for no reason but women who want to have a child should have to choose between having a child and having a job because maternity leave is overkill? i agree with everything else in the article. I even agree with giving a tax break for choosing not to have kids but I just don't agree with the idea that people should get time off for no reason. Like any program' if you don't qualify you don't qualify.
