Nina (Natalie Portman) is one of the most dedicated and gifted dancers at the Met in NYC. It's obvious the girl has some serious mental problems to begin with. She's bulimic, paranoid, controlling and has OCD. She wants the lead in the new ballet Swan Lake badly, so she asks the ballet director Thomas (Vincent Cassel) for the part. He tells her he doesn't think she can handle the part of the Black Swan who is seductive and dark. Then he kisses her pretty forcefully, she bites his lip and runs out. He ends up giving her the part after the bite, seeing that maybe there is a darkness in her he never saw. After Nina gets home, her mother presents her with a cake to celebrate her getting the part. Her mother was also a ballerina at one point, it comes out later in the movie that she had gotten pregnant and gave it all up to have Nina. When Nina refuses the cake because of the calories and certain throwing up she'll have to endure later, her mother kinda goes nuts and threatens to throw the cake away. Which is where you realize her mother is controlling as well and VERY emotionally abusive.
Lily (Mila Kunis) is a new ballerina from San Francisco. She's uncontrolled, carefree and sexual, all the things Nina isn't. After a few rough rehearsals, it's clear Nina cannot let go of her control and her paranoia gets worse and worse. After a dinner announcing her launch as Swan Lake's queen, she is accosted by Beth (Winona Ryder), whom she is replacing. Beth is obviously having issues getting older and is drunk, it's also obvious she got where she is by giving sexual favors to Thomas. She calls Nina a whore.
Nina goes home with Thomas, thinking he's going to try to have sex with her, he doesn't. Rather, he tells her to go home and touch herself. She gets home to tell her mother all about her evening when her mother notices the scratches and irritated skin on her back. Realizing her daughter is scratching again, she drags her into the bathroom and clips all of her nails off. Rambling about how the ballet is too much for Nina to handle and she knew this would happen. Nina wakes up the next morning and does begin to touch herself, getting pretty into it, she turns over to see her mother asleep in the chair next to her and quickly stops.
At rehearsal, Thomas is growing increasingly upset with the fact that Nina cannot grasp the seductive nature of the Black Swan, he is telling her she needs to "feel it". He tells everyone to leave but her and then seduces her, but stops just short of any clothes coming off. He walks away angrily telling her "That was me seducing you." Later in the room, Nina is upset and crying and Lily walks in. Lily hands her a cigarette and compliments her on what a fantastic dancer she is. They talk a bit and then Nina leaves. The next day Thomas approaches Nina and tells her that maybe Lily is right and he's being too hard on her, it's obvious he's telling her this to be a dick. Nina assures him she can handle it and runs off to find Lily. She tells Lily not to talk to Thomas and to stay out of her business, insulting Lily in the process by saying "I don't know why he'd talk to YOU about me anyway." Lily shows up at Nina's house later that night to apologize. Nina had been having an argument with her mother at the time and when Lily suggests they go out for drinks, Nina first declines and then goes, all the while her mother screaming at her that she has to be onstage tomorrow night.
Nina and Lily are talking in a restaurant for a few moments about Thomas and how if Nina would just let him sleep with her he probably wouldn't be so hard on her. Lily also offers Nina some drugs, but Nina refuses. Nina goes to the bathroom and comes out to find Lily talking to two boys, she also sees Lily put the drugs she'd offered Nina earlier into a drink. Nina finally relents and decides to party for the evening and drinks the drink with the drugs in it. After some partying and dancing, Lily and Nina end up at Nina's house. Her mother gets on her for being drunk and on drugs, but Nina tells her to leave her alone and puts a stick in the way of her bedroom door so her mother cannot get in. She then has sex with Lily.
The next morning when she wakes up, she's late for rehearsal. Her mother is sitting in the front room and says nothing when Nina yells at her for not waking her up. When Nina makes it to the Met, she finds Lily dancing her part as a stand in for Nina. Thomas tells Nina to go get warmed up and when she is Lily comes running up to her to talk about what happened last night. Lily realizes that Nina had a lesbian fantasy about her after telling her that Lily did NOT go home with her, but went home with one of the boys.
Nina is working later that night when the lights go out. She yells to have them turned back on, but no one listens. She runs out to an area behind the stage to see Thomas having sex with Lily and in the middle of it, turns into the devil from the ballet.
Nina goes to get fitted for her costume and then learns that Lily has been cast as her alternate, which makes her paranoia reach out of control levels. She asks Thomas to make it someone else, but he refuses. Nina goes home and argues with her mother, slamming her mothers hand in the door several times before finally crawling onto her bed and falling asleep. She wakes up to find her mother asleep in the chair next to her and wakes up to try to leave but the door knob is gone. Her mother pleads with her not to go until they discuss things and tells Nina she's already called Thomas to tell him Nina cannot perform tonight because she doesn't feel good, but Nina hurts her mothers hand further and takes the door knob.
She gets to the Met and tells Thomas she's fine and will dance, much to Lily's protests after Lily had been told she would be dancing that night because Nina wasn't going to be there. Thomas relents and allows Nina to dance the part. Nina is fine for the most part, until she hears people laughing at her and falls from one of the lifts. Thomas is infuriated and screaming at both of them. Nina runs back to her dressing room to get dressed for the part of the Black Swan. Lily comes into her dressing room dressed as the Black Swan and tells her she cannot dance the part. Lily's face suddenly changes into Nina's face and Nina slams her into the full length mirror. They struggle a bit and Nina takes a shard of the glass and stabs her with it, killing her. She drags her into the bathroom and leaves her there, finishes her makeup and goes out to dance the part of the Black Swan. She dances it perfectly and beautifully.
She comes back to her dressing room to change back into the White Swan costume and realizes the blood from the dead body in her bathroom is coming out from under the door. She puts a towel in the way just as someone knocks on the door. She opens it to find Lily there. Nina's confused, thinking she had just killed Lily and she's in the bathroom dead. Lily tells her she's a beautiful dancer and has blown her away and then leaves to finish the ballet. Nina turns to the towel on the floor and picks it up, there's no blood on it, she opens the door to the bathroom, there's no dead body in it. She turns around and you see a small part of blood on her costume and she then pulls out the small shard of glass she'd broken off when she stabbed Lily.
Nina finishes the dance in tears, as does everyone watching. She falls to her death at the end and hears the roar of cheers as everyone bursts into applause. Thomas runs up to tell her she was fantastic and he always knew she could do it. He leans back a bit and Lily gasps, Thomas then sees that Nina has stabbed herself. It ends with the blood spreading through her costume while people are frantically trying to help her and she says "I felt it."
I'm sure I missed something, but that's about it. LOL
