I think every extended family at least has a bad apple, not necessarily a 'moron' but maybe a moron, maybe someone morally corrupt.
My mom's sister is morally corrupt and she has pulled too many awful things too many times and is no longer talked to. My grandmother would like to have a relationship with her, her son, if they would change but not as they are now. Recently the son had a baby (my grandmother's first great-grandchild) and they will not let my grandmother see it, they tried to blackmail people to let them see the baby. So they are completely cut-off from the family, and not being catered to. For a while though parts of the family would give in to them (ie. giving them money, etc) but after a point you cannot allow yourself to be used any more.

I think bailing people out when they keep repeating mistakes does not help them but actually hurts them.
