That was beautiful, I think she is doing it now at almost every show. I am guessing this is the tribute she wanted to do at the BET Awards (minus the song
I'll Be There) but the man who runs BET. Stephen Hill, asked her to sing Ave Marie instead since that was one of MJ's favorite song off of her album.

Apparently, Jamie Foxx said that Stephen called her at the last minute to sing "Ave Marie" instead in a radio interview w/ Rickey Smiley Morning Show
(I didn't know why until Debra Lee mentioned it in passing). I just know for a fact that up until the day of the show she was going to sing "I'll
Be There/Halo". And if "Ave Marie" was in fact MJ's favorite song off of the album, that would explain the randomness.
