Don't get me wrong, I think that word should be abandoned altogether, but this girl is my friend and she should know better. She looked at me like I was insane, but she'll just have to get over it.

She was singing a Kanye West song, and she said it. I didn't say anything about it at first, but later in private I asked her if she had indeed said it.
She said yes, but that it was part of the song. I told her that she can't say that word. I don't care how many times black artists put that in their
songs, it's unacceptable for it to come out of her mouth.

I nip that shit in the bud whenever I hear it. If someone says it for the first time, I make it very clear that I don't like to hear it. Then they never
say it in front of me again.

If it's part of the song, I don't see the big deal about singing the lyrics. People give that word waaaaaaay too much power. It's gotten
ridiculous.

If black folks stopped using the word, this mess would stop happening. That do as I say, not as I do mess is bullshit.

I hate when people have such a flippant attitude about this particular word as if people haven't been hurt by it SEVERAL times and it just something we should merely get over. Words do have power whether people want to acknowledge that or not. |

I said in the op that I think the word should be abandoned altogether. But I also agree with what PurpleLilac said.
Besides, as this girl's friend I felt like it was my duty to tell her that wasn't acceptable. I'd want her to do the same for me if I was walking around saying inappropriate stuff that I couldn't possibly understand. |

The whole conversation just sounds very awkward.
You: Excuse me, did you use the N word earlier today? Her: Yes, I was singing a Kanye song. You: Well, I want you to know that it's totally unacceptable. Her: .... what? |

But its ok for kanye to sell records with songs that have that word, but people cant sing along with his song? I think somewhere there is a disconnect. Either
dont use the word in your songs, or live with people singing along to them. I think it just goes along with there is just a time and place for everything. If a
song uses questionable language, only sing along where no one is around to get offended. sort of like a movie thats g rated vs r rated.
