When I was growing up, my dad was a maintenance manager for this factory, so we got to live on the other side of the property for free, with an identical house next door to us where some old people lived. We had a nice house, a garden, a forest, a pond for fishing and ice skating, an apple/pear orchard, horses, chickens, a hill for sledding, trees for climbing, an airplane hangar and airplane even, and every other thing you would want as a kid. Well, the owner sold the company, it shut down and we had to move.
That was about 20 years ago. Since then, the factory, all the land, and the two houses still on the property have all been vacant with just a caretaker living in a little trailer at the back of the property. Driving by, you can tell that it's kind of fallen into disrepair. The barn is gone, the grass is overgrown except for just around the gravel road, etc. Well, I've never forgotten about that place and still dream of it to this day. Today we went by and decided to check it out.
We pulled in and walked around (nobody around as far as the eye can see) and the place is falling apart. Holes in the eaves, ivy and weeds growing up around it etc. But there just happened to be an unlocked window, so we boosted up my brother and in he went and unlocked the door for us. (yes, I know, we broke the law, I'm still not sorry)
Well...this place hasn't changed a BIT. Same wallpaper, same outdated cabinets, beautiful wood floors, the laundry chute I got stuck in when I was 11. Same stairwell my sister once launched herself off of in her walker when she was a baby.
Of course I refused to go in the basement which I
always believed was haunted.
Now we're thinking about buying all that land where the houses are, if the owner (the new company) will divide. Because we don't want a factory. Although I always wanted to own a cat toy factory.
The memories we have there are just so strong, it was a wonderful place to grow up. Our big fantasy is to open up a farmstand, have horses, go snowmobiling and ride ATVs, and my brother could use the hangar to open up the sports academy he's always wanted. I would live in one of the houses, and he can have the raccoon poop house and fix it up.
