My boyfriend spent money about two weeks ago (food, gas, a rent check). He had about $100 of spending money left for yesterday so he used about $30 of it. He
put in a $300 check today and the balance came up to be about $150. There apparently was about $150 of overdraft fees. All the overdrafts were from the stuff
he spent two weeks ago because they didn't go through on his card until today all at once. It just seems really fucking unfair that they're charging
him overdraft on things he spent two weeks ago (when he had sufficient money). Would they take the overdraft fees off if he went to the bank and talked to them
about it?

They might, if he's never had overdraft charges removed before. But he will have to ask to speak to a manager and they are probably going to give him a
nice little lecture about how a bank works.

Probably not unless this is his first time but no matter when they took it out, the money should've been in there. He should use a register and not just go
off his available balance if he's keeping it that low.

Thats how they make their money. My bank was screwing me over because I keep just enough money in my checking for spending money for the week and its connected
to my savings account for overdraft protection. Well I had like 75 dollars in my checking and I got like 20 dollars on dinner and that was it. Well the bank
decided to transfer money into my checking from savings that I didnt even need to apparently protect me from an overdraft I wasnt going to get and charged me
for it

I'm confused- the stuff he paid for 2 weeks ago didn't come through until today? So shouldn't the money he had set aside for those things still be
in his account today?

yeah those mfers all have the power to refund any fee for any reason, just be nice and if that doesn't work be sad and if that doesn't work get mad and
ask to close your account.

It sucks, and I have been the victim of overdraft issues before. He still should have kept in his mind what had come out already. Maybe I am more anal about
it, but I check and recheck because $35 for a $5 purchase kills me. He needs to write that stuff down and make SURE he knows.

No it was something where you go over like 5 cents but they switch all your charges around to make you get multiple charges instead of just the 1. I never
balanced my checking account when I was younger. I was 16 lol

Irishlvr04 wrote: Bank of America was good at that. I'd deposit $20 (within the time for it deposit right then, at a teller) I would then go say buy a small thing for dinner. Then because I am unemployed and never have much in my account, the money would somehow get deposited a day later, yet the debit charge went through that second. Hence the $35. Maybe I am paranoid, but their computer and what it says, NEVER matches up with my online banking time line. All sorts of stuff would be switched around, late, early, etc. Though there was a good several times where it was my fault. |

This was National City. Bank of America is what was doing the first thing I said though, transfering money from savings to checking that I didnt need or ask
for and then charging me for it. Its been like 50 bucks they have taken from me in the past 2 months

They can't overdraft you if you have the money in there. Whether it went through 2 weeks ago or today he should have had the amount of money he spent in
there. That's just how it works and I wouldn't complain if it was his fault.
The only time I see it worthy to complain is if it is something completely unexpected and unauthorized like once when I was going to the gym I paid for my monthly fee through checking and I paid for half my personal training on credit card. My trainer told me I could pay the other half in increments but instead the next month they randomly took $500 unauthorized from my checking account for the personal trainer when I only had about $300 in there. It was a snowball effect of OD charges because that caused me to overdraft my rent, my bills and my grocery tab. Usually my bank is nice and they removed the OD charges when something similar happened, but that one time I called CS and the bish kinda just laughed at me and said "Not our fault you're not getting that money back. But if you really wanna put in the effort try going to corporate." Bitch! |

I learned my lesson because I was a victim. The banker told me not to carry my debit card anymore. I just withdraw cash now so I know my limit!
Those motherfn banks make money off the poor people. The world is not fair. You just have to get around the system to prevent them from abusing you. |

Did he spent the money he should have left in there to cover the stuff he bought two weeks ago? Did he write checks? Cause if so, this may actually be the second time they have tried to clear it - in which case he is up for an assload of fees from the vendors. |

I agree. On another note I made mistakes earlier this year. When WAMU switched over to Chase it forced me to have a joint account for two cards and for some
reason they would not allow me to make payments on both cards, either one or the other would go through so for 3 months straight I was slapped $40 late fee.
Chase refused to remove them even though I made the payments because they said if they hadn't been received there was nothing they could do. I NEVER missed
a payment on either card before then for 3 years and then suddenly I couldn't stop "missing" payments.
Ontop of that I was not watching my spending on my debit card so I ended up with about $65 in OD charges 2 months in a row. That pissed me off and killed me to lose so much money at once for nothing so I've stopped. I'm paying off my credit cards so they can't make anymore money off me and fuck me over and I'm also learning to use more cash and check my balances more frequently. My new motto in life is if I don't have the money to pay in cash right then then I can't afford to buy it. It's been a little hard because I really want a new laptop but so far so good! |
