Posts: 177 (07/02/2009 12:08 PM) Reply Quote More Recent Posts Message Friend Block Invite Ignore	I had two root canals on my two front upper teeth and this is from a person who was TERRIFIED of dentists before the shot was about the lowlight of my experience. Yes it is a shot and it is SLOOOOOW but I found if I closed my eyes and concentrated on breathing real slow and even it wasn't bad. Even when I went to get my temporary crown replaced with the permanent one, my dentist said, "You know this tooth is loose?" I was like "WHAAAAT?" yeah, so he said he was going to RE-DO the root canal and thank God I didn't lose my tooth but it wasn't bad the second time. I hate to flip flop on you but it does depend which tooth. My dad just had a root canal on a back molar on the bottom and he said it hurt like a bitch!! Good Luck

The most painful part of it was getting the long needles inserted into my gums. There are some dentist that are really good at giving painless shots... some suck. My dentist is really good at it, thank God!

The only time one ever hurt me was when I had one of my wisdom teeth pulled by my dentist (the rest were done by an oral surgeon and I was out during those) and she had to give me 2 shots in the roof of my mouth. Other than that though I don't find them to be painful at all. Does your dentist put a numbing gel on the area before doing the injection? I had 3 needles during my root canal and only vaguely felt the first one, but it didn't hurt. I didn't even realize she did the other 2 until she told me afterward

One done years and years ago and another done as a result of an infection developing after the crown was replaced last year. The second one didn't get the infection and it redeveloped so I had an apicoectomy and that was the worst dental thing I've ever done...and I've done a lot. Root canals aren't that bad - it's a weird sensation and a grinding feeling, pressure, and a strange taste - but I've been told it's much easier on front teeth, so I've been lucky. knocks on wood

There's your teeth and BAM, big honking hook looking thing where the root used to be (they fill the empty canal with material to prevent it from being a gaping hole in your mouth that could potentially house infections.

Posts: 1442 (07/02/2009 1:15 PM) Reply Quote More Recent Posts Message Friend Block Invite Ignore	i've had 3 or 4. i seriously don't even remember. the only one that was as bad as i expected was the last one, because a different dentist (than who'd done the others) did it, and she didn't use enough novacaine. But the others were, honestly, your standard dental procedure. uncomfortable because you're sat with your mouth open for a long period while instruments are being shoved in your mouth, but i was in any serious pain during or after. I was prepared to go to work, in fact!

Keeps me from straining to keep my mouth open. Again, it's a little thing, but helps a lot. I didn't even think about these two things, but yeah. My dentist does both these things too. They do both make a big difference.
