Make It Right Architects Break New Green Ground with Duplex DesignsFamilies from the Lower 9th Ward can now choose to build a duplex in the Make It Right neighborhood. Until now, only single family homes were available and being built on the site devastated by Hurricane Katrina. Fourteen acclaimed local, national and international architects volunteered their time, met with the community and potential homeowners and applied their experience and creativity to come up with high quality designs that push the envelope. The Designs While each of the 14 duplex designs is unique, the architects tackled some common problems and arrived at innovative solutions that could change the way multi-family homes are built: Flexibility - A number of the designs feature interchangeable floor plans that allow the families to change the size and configuration of the two homes as their family size, needs or economic situation changes. Integration with the Street - Increasing the elevation of the homes made them safer from flooding, but interrupted the connectedness between the porch and life on the street -a relationship valued by the Lower 9th Ward community. To solve this problem, several architects created midpoint landings or stoops in the stairways where the family could gather. Landscaping as a design and energy element - Several architects incorporated landscaping into their design of these solar-powered, highly
energy efficient homes to maximize exposure to sun and shade and cut heating and cooling costs. And because outdoor living is such a core part of life in the
Lower 9th Ward, many of the designs include courtyards, interior gardens, and social use of the area under the elevated house.
Affordability - To cut the cost, but not the quality of these duplexes, several of the architects, stacked the houses one on top of the other to reduce the "footprint" of the home and simplify construction.

I still want to hear Brad's take on all of this, preferably in a Charlie Rose-type interview.
From Anne Thompson of Variety http://weblogs.variety.com/thompsononhollywood/2009/07/soderbergh-and-mann-too-smart-for-the-room.html#comments July 1 Soderbergh and Mann: Too Smart for the Room? As much as I want to see the Steven Soderbergh/Brad Pitt version of Moneyball, reality needs to return to the movie business. Soderbergh himself occupies a strange nexus within Hollywood. He once told me that he didn't want to direct movies out of the back seat of a limousine. And he is willing to play studio ball or indie ball, as he sees fit. At the same time, like all gifted directors, he wants to push himself, and the art form. But he often loses interest in what movie audiences might want. Sony chief Amy Pascal (who explains herself to the LAT's Patrick Goldstein) has every right to pull the plug on a movie that started to
look too risky for a $57 million starter budget. Add marketing costs and the movie would have to score at least $100 million theatrically, and the DVD
cushion isn't there any more. (The NYT reports its Moneyball analysis here.)
That's the real reason that reality has set in. Soderbergh has also stated that the economics of the movie business are out of whack. He's right. A correction is long overdue. But I hate to see worthy movies going by the wayside. It would make sense for more filmmakers to step into the "specialty" side of the business and make these risky movies for a price. Of course the Soderberghs and Michael Manns of the world want to express themselves as artists. And ride the studio gravy train. But the studios are not going to indulge their whims anymore at high budget levels. I hate for Public Enemies' mixed reception to give the studios an excuse to not make movies like this anymore. I also don't want Universal execs to abandon their willingness to try out-of-the-box movies that sometimes work (Wanted, Mamma Mia!) and sometimes don't (State of Play, Duplicity). The last thing we want is for them to make more movies like Land of the Lost! Kim Masters examines Mann's movie m.o.. Because it's only going to get tougher for smart movies for adults to get made, moviemakers who land a chance at bat need to hit these films out of the park--and connect with audiences. Now is not the time for navel-gazing and experimentation at big-budget levels. That's the deal. |

A few more pics, including one with Brad, of the Mini Capsule Hotel that Brad recently bought in Basel
http://www.b3designers.co.uk/blog/2009/06/mini-capsule-hotel-by-atelier-van.html
Mini Capsule Hotel, a six-bed dorm by Atelier Van Lieshout, featured in an outdoor installation called Never-EverLand at Design Miami/Basel earlier this month. Curated by Natalie Kovacs and presented by Carpenters Workshop Gallery, the installation was billed as a "dystopian/utopian garden of unearthly delights". Mini Capsule Hotel was bought by actor Brad Pitt (see picture), who apparently plans to install it on his private beach. |

http://www.movieline.com/2009/07/mlb-approval-still-murky-as-moneyball-circles-the-drain.php
Debacles MLB Approval Still Murky as Moneyball Circles the DrainContacted yesterday afternoon in a follow-up by Movieline, MLB spokesman Matt Bourne corroborated what he told the NYT: The
league had been "having a dialogue" with Sony to approve the use of their franchises' logos and uniforms, thus nailing down the historical
accuracy of author Michael Lewis's best-selling source material. But pressed further over whether any approval had been granted - it's a pretty
straight yes-or-no question - Bourne reiterated that the league continued to work with the studio on clearances for the film, adding, "We're not the
reason for the hold-up."
Sony reserved its own comment for the blowout piece over at the LAT, where Pascal elaborated on the company line that Soderbergh's script revisions went too experimentally far afield for the studio's taste:
Pascal confirms she'd still be interested in shooting Steven Zaillian's original script with Pitt, a Soderbergh loyalist whose agents at
CAA would still love nothing more than to bundle in one of their directors and put this humiliation behind them. (Co-star and
fellow CAA client Demetri Martin could use the gig, too.) But with the parties on no fewer than three different development pages
(literally), the smartest step for everybody may just be to let it die. Soderbergh needs to get back to Cleo anyway, right?
