I couldn't understand a word they said so I didn't get the grumpy vibe at all from him.
It appeared that he had been eating and came straight to the interview. It was like he was trying to make sure there wasn't any food on his teeth before talking.

You know how he always likes to have a toothpick in his mouth after he's eaten.
Maybe they didn't have any. He didn't look grumpy to me either.
