best book to movie adaptation? |

I think "Memoirs of a Geisha" was really good. And even though the movies leave a lot of little details out, I think the Harry Potter have been
adapted pretty well into movies.

Hmmm I think the 1995 BBC adaptation of Pride and Prejudice was among the best I've seen. Probably a few more that I can't think of at the moment.

Even though they drastically changed the ending, Fight Club is still my favorite book to movie ever.

Jane Smith wrote:I hate to say this but Emma Thimpson's adaptation of Jane Austens' Sense & Sensibility was better that the actual book which was good enough itself. I watched Charles Dickens' Little Dorritt on PBS(Matthew Macfayden) and they did a brilliant job on it. The Pride & Prejudice adaptation that i enjoyed was the one with Colin Firth. I love Matthew Macfayden but Colin will always be Mr Darcy for me. Also, I absolutely adore the Disney version of Heidi which starred Jason Robards and Noley Thornton who had a role in the original 90210; i know she was related in some way to Dylan McKay

BBC did a recent adaptation of Sense and Sensibility that I found much better than Emma Thompson's. It's a longer one--I think about 4 hours, but I
think it really does justice to the book.

I did not like the Knightley/Macfayden version, but I did like Macfayden in Little Dorrit BBC did a recent adaptation of Sense and Sensibility that I found much better than Emma Thompson's. It's a longer one--I think about 4 hours, but I think it really does justice to the book. I love the Emma Thompson version of S&S, but I agree with you, that the PBS version was wonderful also. I'm just watching the Masterpiece Theater version of Jane Eyre and it's great! I love it. It does a great job of showing how awkward Jane could be. The only time that I've said that a movie is BETTER than a book is A Little Princess. Otherwise, the book is always better to me! |

I think that in this case it sacrificed the artistry of the Ang Lee film for a more strict faithfulness to the novel. While the Lee film is shorter and cuts some details, it stays more true to the feel of the novel. I also think that the BBC Elinor came off as too cold. Yes I know that Elinor is supposed to be sensible, but not to the point where we don't care about her at all because she seems to lack emotions! |

The Shawshank Redemption is still one of the best book to movie adapations I've seen.

Jane Smith wrote:ITA about P&P *swoon*. Colin and Jennifer were perfect. Speaking of Mr. Darcy, Bridget Jones and the sequel turned out nearly perfect. You Jane Austen lovers I would recommend the book and film for The Jane Austen Book Club - I like the film better though, but both are good. But my favorite of all time is The Color Purple. I think Spielberg was robbed of an Oscar - he did an incredible job. And the whole cast was wonderful. |

Even though it was a short story, I'm going to add Stand By Me (adapted from The Body). Oh and I love the 1993 version of The Secret Garden!
