On the night that Henry was fatally shot by Claire's brother Mark, there were two Henrys on the scene. Henry 1 and Henry 2. Let's say that Henry 1 is the younger version who still has his feet and Henry 2 is the older one (the one that gets shot) who doesn't have feet. We know throughout the book that Henry is always running into an older or a younger version of himself so this time isn't any different. Henry 1 is out of the way of the deer hunt and is just, well we'll say that he's just hanging out. Since Henry 2 goes to that place in time without any feet he can't run away and, thinking it's some kind of big hulking deer, Mark shoots and kills him. Henry only jumps time when he's stressed and I would think that being shot is enough stress to make him jump home. So Henry 2 returns to 2010 or whenever it was when Claire and Alba are home with all of their family and friends. Henry 1 stays behind to explain things to Mark and Claire's father. That's why when Claire returns to that area, there's just a big mess of blood - it's Henry 2's blood from being fatally wounded.
