EVERY family function we have involves some sort of Michael Jackson dance-off
I remember being OBSESSED with the Thriller video. My little sister cried the first time she saw it. My dad literally just laughed at her as we all watched amazed. When the HIStory album came out, my cousins and I held our own award show My mom used to sing "Ben" while she made dinner for us. It was her favorite MJ song. Last night my little sister made me cry when she said that one of the first things she wondered upon hearing the news last night was if Michael would perform concerts for our mom in Heaven.
The 1993 Superbowl Heal the World, I'm nearly positive I still have on VHS, as well as the Budapest concert. I literally stayed up until 5am on Wednesday night watching Moonwalker and downloading the songs from Dangerous that I didn't have on my iPod. The night before it was Ghosts. The timing of my rediscovery of his genius was just SO SO eerie. I dunno, there are so many memories... It would take me forever to write them all out. |

It's pretty simple, but I remember standing in the family room at my house when I was like 5/6 yrs. old and dancing to Thriller. It was the first Michael
Jackson song I heard, and it's still my favorite.
My mom has pictures of me in a frilly, lace dress and ballet flats dancing to that video. |

He's just a staple of my generations childhood. Back when MTV actually played videos, everyone had their favorite Michael song & video. And when he had
a new video premier, you waited for it to premier because you knew it would be awesome. I think the one that stands out the most in my mind is Jam. Only
because that was when I was in 1st or 2nd grade, just starting to get into pop culture. I even remember the line up. TLC 'Baby baby baby', Kriss Kross
'jump', boyz II men 'mowtown philly', and of course, the two most popular Michaels in the world, 'Jam'.

When I was little I would go downstairs with my grandma and put on his records and we would dance together. I miss those moments. That's when singing
became my passion.

1.The whole Thriller period. I LOVED MJ. He is the reason I fell in love with music. I used to have the video of The Making of
Thriller which I used to watch over and over again! I loved how they showed they made him into a monster with makeup. Awesome!
2. The classic Grammy performance in 1983 of Billie Jean. I wasn't even two years old but I was up trying to dance in front of the TV. My parents have the pictures of it. 3. Going to his concert around 84. My dad won the tickets at work and I can remember being on his shoulders and seeing MJ. 4. The Smooth Criminal video and mini-movie that went with it. 5.The Way You Make Me Feel video. I loved how he was chasing her through the alley. 6. The Remember The Time video. And all the stars who were in it. Iman was so fierce! 7. When I finally figured out what Billie Jean was about! 8. When I discovered the Off The Wall album which remains my favorite MJ album to this day. |

There are many memories.
First off, Thriller is my Halloween jam. It's a personal tradition to listen to it at least once on Halloween. It was also the source of the first urban legend I remember. The story was that the narrator in the song (Vincent Price although we didn't know his name) broke his neck breakdancing and died. It's so stupid thinking about it now. And yes, there's the Thriller video. To me that is still the best video ever even though it scared me as a child. Moonwalking. It still looks cool and I still wish I could do it. But I better stop now before this becomes a novel.

My favorite would probably be when they played "Beat It" at my Jr High graduation (get it?) and I busted out the dance moves that I had known
forever.
But...so many. My parents used to play his video for me ALL the time when I was really young so thats how I learned all the dance moves to the songs. We had a concert video, a bunch of his music videos, Motown 25, etc. |

I LOVED Billie Jean. I was always wondering why she wasn't in the video when I was a kid. lol
Thriller scared the shit outta me. I HATED that video. It would always come on right before my bedtime too and my parents were always watching it. I remember when Remember the Time premiered and all the major network stations had time slot for it. Actually, I remember quite a few MJ videos having there own spots for premiers. I remember the countdown on BET for the Scream video. |

This is really strange, but my brother and I are 5 years apart, so he grew up in the height of Thriller, while I was born. My brother set out to make sure that
I knew who Michael Jackson was and his greatness. I remember being 3 years old, we had just gotten cable and the "Thriller" video came on. I said it
looked scary and he forced me to watch it because my brother at 8 knew he was the greatest entertainer ever. Every Michael Jackson album that came out my
brother made me listen to with him. Telling me it wasn't my fault that I was born too late to really understand the true greatness, so he wanted to make
sure that I understood it. I remember the first time that I saw "Black or White," my brother and I just sitting there in anticipation. I remember
when "You Are Not Alone" came out and we sang it for months. I remember how, my brother, who does nothing but download and burn cds refused to
download or burn "Number Ones" or "Invincible" because he couldn't do that to MJ. I remember when the CBS special at MSG came on and I
missed it. When my brother found out, he drove 2 1/2 hours home with the VHS to make sure that I saw it. I remember how every time I came home with a Michael
Jackson DVD he was so proud of me.
My brother and I grew up like best friends, but we've grown apart lately mainly because we haven't agreed with each others life decisions... Yet, the thing that still remains is our mutual love for MJ. In 2005 after not speaking to each other for months, I texted my brother "Michael Jackson verdict: Not Guilty" he responded "YESSSSSSSSSSSSSS!!" and we slowly started speaking again. We had another falling out end of 2007 and only when we've both been at my parents house have we acknowledged each others existence. Yesterday, while I was reading the news on JJB in absolute shock I got a call from my brother. First thing he says, "I'm driving home from work, IS IT TRUE THAT MICHAEL JACKSON DIED?" I couldn't even answer him. Probably a silence of like 30 seconds. Then I say, "I am in complete shock I don't even know what to say." We spent the next 20 minutes talking on the phone about how we could not believe that Michael Jackson was dead. He told me he's coming home this weekend and we just have to have our own Michael Jackson marathon. Strange how things work.

THe first song I remember knowing was Billie Jean, when I was like 3 years old.
I just remember Michael's music ALWAYS being a part of my home...that's what I love, what my mom loves. And its still remarkable to me how fresh and wonderful his music is. Songs that are 20+ years old, that if they came out today, would be praised as innovative and fresh and sounding like nothing else |

I remember watching the Smooth Criminal video on MTV when I was really young and trying to figure out what it was about and also my mind being blown at his
almost horizontal dance move thing.
