You say, "she/he's adorable", and keep your mouth shut.

I try to come up with whatever feature kinda looks like either parent, and then comment on that

Say, "I'm scared of babies" and then run away?

Pick a feature. Any feature. I am not above busting out "Oh, look at his cute little hands."

You find the one thing on them that is attractive and comment on it. If there's just no hope for the child, you compliment their outfit.

I kind of feel the same when somebody shows you a pic of their SO and they aren't good looking. I always hope I'm not subconsciously grimacing.

I learned to say that when I showed my best friend a pic of my newly born nephew who I thought was the most beautiful baby I'd ever seen, But a few years later when I looked at it, it was awful! Of
course, he truly is adorable now.

"ooooh, so precious"
"oh my goodness, look at that baby" all of these work with the southern accent when said in a non sarcastic way. |

I recently used "Look at those cheeks!" when shown a picture of a chubby, yet not too cute baby.
I had a friend who was very honest when he thought that his second child was not cute. We found it mean, but at least he was truthful. |
