My friend got one in VA not too long ago. She got a lawyer so she didnt get jail time. Just a shitload of community service hours, lost her license, and has to
go to some drinking classes or whatever.
Oh yeah and shitload of fines. |

i don't know and i live here but i think they're pretty strict based on the fact my husband's friend just got his license suspended. he was a block
away from home, got pulled over, passed the field test but refused to do the breathalyzer so they took him in over night, he was released the next day but if
you refuse the breathalyzer it's an automatic suspension of your license here. for up to 1 year! yikes.

If it's his first one, it probably won't be that bad (fine, stayed jail time, suspended license) |

I'd consider a $1,000 fine, jail time, and no driving privelages PERIOD, to be "bad."
You can get work permts/limited licenses if your license is supended for a DUI. So, you can still drive. And, for a first-time DUI, I've never seen a fine over $1,000. And I've never seen jail time. |

So, basically he was just out of the fine money and had to go every other weekend or so and scoop soup for the homeless |

My brother got a DUI and his licensed was suspended for a while and he had to pay mucho fines and take some classes. It was his first offense though so maybe
he got off easy.

Mistress Darcy wrote:The only real "punishment" is having the prior DUI on your record (incase you get another one, it makes things a little worse...) Most DUI fines here are around $600. I've never seen a fine over $1,000 for a first-time DUI. And, the limited license thing is a joke.... you can drive six days/week, between, say, 7AM and 7PM...or, 5AM and 5PM, etc. A 12-hour block each day. I think you have to pay an arm and a leg to get your license back though..... |

Her boyfriend ended up getting ANOTHER DUI and it didn't seem like he was punished more than for the first one. It makes me angry because he got two in
less than two years and still drives allllll the time and basically had no consequences. His mom pays his fees for him so he doesn't even do that
I guess maybe he is slipping through the cracks a bit though? |

The government (federal and state) whine and moan and bitch about drunk drivers and their threat to the public, yet do nothing to fix the problem (there are many ways it could be fixed)...and they won't, because DUI's bring in a lot of revenue for the states. They don't care about public safety, they care about $$. |

A friend of mine's DUI cost him quite a bit of money and six months suspended license. He went nearly batshit crazy sitting in his house all the time and
was lucky that his employer agreed to letting him work from home three days a week.
The ironic thing is that because he was mostly alone in the house for all that time, he started drinking like mad. Thankfully when he got his license back he quit that, but I don't know that "God I'm bored, guess I'll get drunk" was the intended result that law enforcement was looking for...and I bet that's not an isolated case, either. |

The best thing he could do is to get a really good lawyer.

Kells, he should definitely get a lawyer or at least a public defender (since you mentioned that bit about him needing the loan), and try to get as much
assistance as possible with taking a DUI class and doing community service. It's not as bad here as it could be, but the other posters are right; if he
gets a second one in Georgia, he's fucked.

Is this his first offense? If so:
GEORGIA DUI PENALTIES First Offense Within a Five Year Period Fine $300.00 -$1000.00 plus any statutory surcharges (typically 15-25%). Jail 10 days to 12 months, all except for 24 hours may be suspended, stayed or probated. Theoretically, if your blood alcohol level is less than 0.08 grams %, you do not even have to do the 24 hours. Practically speaking, don't count on it. Moreover, on all DUI cases made on or after May 1, 1999, if you plead guilty or are convicted of DUI, you must be placed on twelve months probation less any jail time received. Community Service The law requires a minimum of 40 hours of community service unless you are under 21 years of age in which case you must do at least 20 hours. The actual time is set by the Court. License Suspension If you are 21 or over, your license will be suspended for one year. You will be able to get your license back at the end of 120* days if you have completed an alcohol/drug risk reduction course (DUI school) and paid the appropriate reinstatement fee. During those 120 days, you will be able to get a limited driving permit. If you are under 21, your license will be revoked for either 6 months (under 0.08 blood alcohol level) or 12 months (0.08 or higher) and no limited permit is allowed |

sooo we're gonna assume he's not coming up next week?
he was supposed to send up a money order for his portion of the rent/deposit today. |
