There is a spray you can get that is supposed to deter them from peeing. It could have that citrus smell someone else mentioned
Could you let a pet you love go due to behavioral problems?

Yeah, I plan on calling the vet and then hitting up the pet store for some citrus stuff or Feliway.
ETA: Okay, the Feliway website says it's for cats that spray. My cats are neutered, so she isn't spraying or marking her territory. |

My cats would scratch the carpet anytime a door was closed. I have had cats that peed right outside their litter boxes, and we said we'd exhaust all options before ever even considering getting rid of any of them. I would put area rugs down on every carpeted area until I could figure out a solution. Explore ALL options. The last one should be getting rid of it... |

As I said in my original post, I have dealt with many things with her that have cost me money and none of them have frustrated me like this has. I AM exploring all options. WTF do you think me coming to JJB is? To say I shouldn't be a pet owner is fucking stupid. |

I didn't say you shouldn't be a pet owner. If you are going to explore all options then it doesn't apply to you. I was making a statement based on
that criteria alone. I am not on a high horse either, but I can share my opinions and offer suggestions whether you give a shit or not.
I am not going to hug you and say getting rid of your cat over carpet if you haven't explored all options is ok. Sorry! I used to be in animal rescue and we rescued mainly dumped pets for whatever reason. There is usually ALWAYS a way to deal with an issue like this one. |

Its possible that moving to the new place may help the problem, since the carpets wont have any residue.
Is there something else that happened about the same time she started to pee? Any changes about the time she started to pee? Does she only do it when you are not home? Does she ever use the litterbox? Is the skin problem she has stress-related? What other pets do you have? Are there only a few spots she pees or is it all over the apartment? Are you absolutely certain its her and not the other cat peeing? |

If you really think you don't sound completely self-righteous in your previous post, then my apologies for being defensive.

daisy bouquet wrote:Nothing that I can think of off the top of my head. And she does it when I'm home, when I'm gone, whenever. And she uses the litter box to shit, but not to pee. And her skin problem is weather and stress related, the vet thinks. He gives her a steroid shot every six months and then I give her dexamethasone pills every week. To explain more about the skin problem, she would scratch herself on her face until she bled. She's never had mites (as one vet though was the cause). This treatment that the current vet has been doing seems to work best to keep her from being so bad. I only have the two cats, there are about 5 spots in my apartment that she has consistently peed. I have a black light lamp and have discovered a couple more random, one time spots, but that's it. And I'm POSITIVE it's not my other cat because I've seen her use the litter box many times, and I have caught this cat (with the pee problem) in the act of peeing in the main 5 spots. And to answer the other poster's question, I changed the litter after she started peeing because I thought maybe didn't like the old litter anymore. It worked for a bit, and I actually personally like this litter better (it's made out of corn and absorbs smell much better). AND one of my boxes is a pellet box, so she has different types to choose from if she wanted to. |

Glory Glory Hallelujah wrote: Self-righteous was definintely not my intention. Perhaps because I have seen so many dumped pets while in rescue for things that we eventually were able to control by being persistent, I tend to show a bit of frustration on the pets behalf. Too many people dump their pets out of straight inconvenience and selfishness and so my tolerance for excuses is a bit short. Not saying you are one of those, but I think you know what I mean. |

I am terrified that there will be a day where my dog will have to be put to sleep because she is so aggressive. She has bitten 2 people and trys to attack
every man that she comes across. I'm so scared that if she bites the wrong person, they will either kill her or she will have to be put down.

As for back to the cats, what exactly have you brought to this topic besides being what you dislike so much? |

I have 3 dogs, one of them pees all over the place and nothing we have done makes him stop. I clean for hours a week so the house smells nice and I have
honestly cried my eyes out because I'm so frustrated. My husband suggested giving him away a few weeks ago and just the thought of it made me physically
ill. Like you, no one in my family could take him. I've decided to just deal with it no matter annoying it can be. I've gotten it down to science with
the cleaning, I know where he pees and I keep wee wee pads around my house as unattractive it may look. He's stained our hardwood floors and I have
conveniently placed area rugs all over until we can afford to get them re-done.
I'm in a different situation from you, we have a house so I don't know what I would do if it was an apartment. I don't think I could ever bring myself to do it, but I wouldn't think you were a bad person if you made that decision. |

I don't know if anyone has mentioned this yet but I've been told that you shouldn't change a cat's litter or food drastically. It should be a
gradual change over a period of time. Maybe try mixing the new litter with the old litter and see how she does?
