How did you get diagnosed?

I first saw an endriconolgist at the suggestion of my regular doctor upon learning of previous underactive thyroid history and the fact that I
didn't/wasn't getting my period. He determined after tests that it was just that, an underactive thyroid and prescribed me birth control to straighten
out my period. Apparently he told my regular doctor that it was PCOS and I didn't find out until over a year later that the endriconolgist had even thought
it was PCOS, let alone diagnosed me with it. It was quite a kicker when I went to see the regular doctor about some blood work and she told me. *shakes head*.

I was diagnosed by my OBGYN, who then sent me to a reproductive endriconolgist. I had a ultrasound done and some test. It was right after I had a miscarriage
in 1999 & I went from weighing 140 lbs to 200 in a matter of six months & couldn't explain why I gained so much so fast when I wasn't doing
anyting different (exercising the same, eating the same). That is when he diagnosed me. I'm now on birth control to help regulate my cycles & also
Metformin for the weight (which they say help...but I have not seen any weight loss, just inches so far...just started Metformin a month ago).
I have gone through several infertility treatments with no success while I was married. Had a total of 3 confirmed miscarriages. I'm going to start trying again next year. |

I had a cousin that was diagnosed with it. I'd looked up my symptoms on WebMD before that, and matched with PCOS, but just figured that it was just me
being a hypochondriac. But after she was diagnosed, I finally went and asked my PCP for a referral to a gyno, and was diagnosed with PCOS after some blood
tests. Pissed me off, though, because I'd just spent thousands of dollars on a 6-month regime of Accutane for my acne, which was a waste of money. Went on
birth control after being diagnosed and the acne mostly went away.

By a specialty doctor at Children's Hospital- I didn't have my period for like 6 months and I was gaining weight around the mid section and had hair
growth on the chin
I went to my new endro doctor and I just did a 24 hour urine test where I had to collect my urine in a huge jug for 24 hours on Saturday. It was to test my 17-Hydroxyprogesterone. But I've had many blood test. I take BC and Metformin- Metformin helped with weight loss (it'll take a while) and it also helps with hair growth on the chin. I have one pesky hair that keeps popping up but it was better then the 5-6 I had. I also monitor my blood sugar also. |

Nothing - I've eaten smaller portions but you're supposed to take it with food or a glass of milk and it also depends on your dosage- I start with 1
pill twice daily and then when I got used to it it was up to 2 pills daily and my dosage was upped also

I went to an endocrinologist too and supposedly all the tests came back normal, but IDK. I don't feel convinced.
I always suspected I had it due to my persistent acne and how hairy I am. It's probably not as noticeable to people, but I'm a slave to plucking. My cramps used to be more intense and my period was heavier, but after going on BC for a while (I'm now off it) its currently normal. |

I am- and I'm working on it- I work out 3+ time a week (and also play Ice Hockey and Tennis) and PCOS just makes it harder to lose the weight and most of
my weight is around the mid section but for me it's 20-25 lbs overweight (if anything more than that it wouldn't look good)
BUT not everyone with PCOS is overweight or have weight problems To help lose the weight it's more a insulin resistance diet that is the most effective for PCOS |

Before I start, no I do not have a weight issue... I'm 4'10" and 90lbs.
Went to my doctor (internal medicine) for my yearly check up... they called about a week later telling me test results came back with me having PCOS. I had no clue what that was... all the nurse told me was that I should be very worried and that I may not be able to ever have kids. That scared the heck out of me. The doctor then ordered me to have an ultrasound to check out the cysts on my ovaries... results came back that I do have PCOS, but the cysts are very small. I'm supposed to go every six months for an ultrasound. Apparently it's normal for women to have cysts on their ovaries...just as long as they're not enlarged. I guess what I was so confused about was that I had always gone to a Gynocologist before this Internal Medicine doctor and he--my Gyno never detected any symptoms of this syndrome. (Gyno retired that's why I have a new doctor)

I have PCOS, went for years with resistant moderate acne, some chin hair, and weight on my belly that would not go away no matter what. The repro endo I went
to did a fasting glucose and I am very very insulin resistant, I had four times the correct amount of insulin. I follow the insulin resistant diet most of the
week, take metphormin 1500 a day (three times a day with meals) and spironolactone for the acne and facial hair. My skin went from splotchy to PERFECT and
clear. I lost 6 inches around my waist and 5 on my hips. Went from 156 to 135.

Then she had me do Gonal-F injections, went in every other day after my cycle to see if my eggs were at least 18mm & when they were at least 18mm I got a injection of Noval to make me ovulate within 36 hours. This worked all twice but I ended up having the miscarriages. One at 8 weeks, the other at 9 weeks. |

I'm pretty sure I have it. Mine really isn't severe though. I have irregular periods. There's no rhyme or reason to when they come. My last one was
at the end of April, so that's like 50 something days. I never know when mine is coming.
My doctor told me i probably have it, but I need to go back for bloodwork. I'm putting it off for a while. |

I have PCOS. Definitely NOT overweight. My periods are irregular, heavy, extremely painful but short. I have moderate acne and some extra facial hair where
there shouldn't be! By my gynecologist just started me on BC so we'll see if it helps with the symptoms.

I have it, and I am not overweight either. Was diagnosed through bloodwork and ultrasound.
