Morons shoot up some guy a few blocks away and drive to the Elementary school I'm teaching summer school at. My kids, THANKFULLY were at lunch and didn't witness anything. It all happened right outside our classroom window. I hear sirens getting closer, and closer, some screeching tires, and finally a cop yelling "get your hands where I can FUCKING see them! I need to see your FUCKING HANDS!" It looks like four freaking KIDS in the car, skinny little adolescents, and they are scared shitless. At this point, I had no idea they had just shot someone. I was watching out of the corner of the window, realllllly bad idea in retrospect, but I felt like I had to know what was going on in case one of them fled into the school. Thankfully backup showed up within seconds and they apprehended all four suspects. The school was on lockdown for an hour and a half. As soon as I was cleared to leave my room I went to check up on the kids, who were at this point oblivious to it all and playing basketball in the gym. One kid said, "What, did someone get shot again or something?" It broke my heart to hear it come out of his mouth so casually.
I just can't even imagine what I would have done if my students were in the room. I thank God I got this "practice" drill in case something else happens.
