Everyone I've known or ever heard of that's had bypass surgery has done really well afterward. They lead very happy, healthy lives.

My dad did in February. He had a hard recovery, but he has been doing very well and feeling good.

It's a pretty standard procedure now, he's going to be fine and great. As long as he takes care of his nutrition and physical self after the surgery,
all should be well!

My mom, my dad and my uncle.
Believe me, it was painful but they are much better now. |

I don't work in cardiac surgery so I don't know too much about it but I do know that all of them come out on a vent (breathing machine) so don't be
alarmed about that. At my hospital, they usually try to get them breathing on their own the day after. Then everything else is pretty much routine--getting
them to get up, sit up in a chair, etc.

My FIL had it a few years back. He passed in April from a massive heart attack. /Debbie Downer/ Sorry, but I wish him the best of luck!
My uncle had it many years ago when he was in his early 40's. He is fine now. |

My grandmother had a triple bypass when she was 83. She covered very well from the surgery.

My dad. The worst part for him was the first time he woke up in ICU. Lotsa pain. The nurse realized it and shooed us outta there. She gave him something
and he was never in that much pain again. He made a very smooth recovery and is going strong now.
ETA: He didn't have a vent when we saw him in ICU. |

Yes, I agree with the painful and I'd also add that they look a lot sicker after the surgery. So that is one thing to expect as well.
All I know who have had the surgery have done well and have really changed their lives after to lead a healthier life. |

My dad had a triple bypass this past january. He was in a lot of pain, but he got better each day. After about a month or so, he was almost fully recovered.
Now I'd say he is 120% better because he feels so much more enerjetic that he did prior to the surgery.
One thing that concerned us after his surgery was his coughing. His throat was really sore from the breathing tube he had, and it hurt to breathe, and it really hurt to cough. He had trouble talking for a while... but eventually it got better. I think all three of my moms brothers have had a bypass surgery. Basically, the better health you are in before the surgery, the quicker the recovery time.

annievictoria wrote:Well, he was in a lot of pain. He slept in a recliner in the living room for 2 months because he couldn't sleep comfortably laying down on a bed. He was sick from the medicines he was on and was taking an anti-nausea pill for quite awhile. And I'm sure this doesn't happen with everyone, but he was really anxious and wanted someone with him at all times for the first few weeks because he was afraid of something happening to him--but his case was also different because he went through trauma before the surgery when his heart suddenly stopped and he was in a coma for a few days and was in the hospital for 2 weeks prior to the surgery. But like I said, it's not like that for everyone and my dad had complications and other circumstances that not everyone who has bypass surgery does, so your boyfriend's dad probably won't have such a hard time. And despite all that, my dad has been back to work now for almost 2 months and is feeling incredibly good compared to how he was through his recovery. The body is a lot more resilient than people realize, I think--bypass is serious stuff, but most people recover and feel better than they ever did before. |
