Depends on how much you will do yourself.

Well, the Duggars say you can do it cheap. How many kids do you have to help you?

Depends on a million things. Where you live, how much land you want, what kind of house, contractors, etc.

I probably won't do much if anything myself. And I don't have any kids.

Probably Seattle(or a surrounding area), 2-3,000 sq ft house and a nice size back yard with a pool and enough room for kids and dogs to run around.

I live in a newer development and the new houses being built range from $150k-250k for a townhome and $250k-700k for a single family home.

you have to buy land. and the mess with the builder. 2-3k sq ft house will cost you a pretty good penny.

Maybe I'm better off buying one and doing some remodeling.

a few people I worked with built their own houses. their financial challenge was continuing to pay for their current residences while starting to pay on the
building loan for the new place. I remember one stressing cuz the building was taking too long and the loan was going to come due before they were ready.

my parents built a house like two years ago. so much mess with the builder...towards the end of completion of the house he filed for bankruptcy... we
didn't find out until he totally ditched the project. the land they bought was for $30k. and their house is about 2800sqft...maybe. total i think came to
be about $300k. mind you, this is in louisiana.

I want one, too. It has to be solar-powered as well.

We had a home built, but it was in a subdivision so we chose from 6 or 7 different plans they offered. We chose all the stuff inside, the lot, every single
feature from the light fixtures, loft or 4th bedroom, door knobs, paint colors inside and out, etc. Mind you, they had a list of stuff we could choose from so
it's not like we could just paint the house orange if we wanted, but it was a good selection. The entire thing came to no more than we would have spent
buying a resale.
It's an entirely different experience to buy your own land and hire a contractor, though. I liked doing it through a builder. |
